Nana Vaughn

Nana VaughnNana Gaskins Vaughn has had a varied career as a music educator, freelance musician and music administrator. She received her bachelors and masters degrees at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and as a musician she has played in back-up orchestras with musical groups such as the Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin and Il Divo. Currently the Assistant Principal Violist with the Reading Symphony, she has performed professionally with many orchestras including the Baltimore Symphony, Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, American Pops Orchestra, Delaware Symphony, Charleston (SC) Symphony, and Richmond (VA) Symphony.

A passionate educator, Ms. Vaughn was a Quarter-finalist for the 2016 Grammy Music Educator Award. At UMBC, she has recently taught M362 Arts in Education as well as a workshop Violin to Viola: Making the Switch to Alto Clef. She teaches a large strings program in Howard County, and is also in demand as an adjudicator and clinician. Previously, she directed two orchestras in the New World Youth Orchestras program for seven years. She also taught as an applied violin adjunct instructor at Purdue University and graduate student instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She teaches violin and viola privately in her Howard County home.
